Coach Palmer's MVP School of Sports

Coach Michael V. Palmer has been a part of basketball in Oconee and its surrounding counties for over 17 years. He has completed his 6th season as Head Coach of the Prince Avenue Middle School Girls Basketball Team. He brings a well-rounded fundamental knowledge of the great game of basketball, along with a love of teaching the game to those who are truly interested in learning it. Coach Palmer is eager to provide competitive sports work outs, leagues, camps, clinics and tournaments that will provide a challenging learning experience along with fun and excitement.

MVP School of Sports Philosophy

Love the Game
This is the biggest reason boys/girls play any sport. It is important for me to have MVP School of Sports provide programs that will be very challenging for the boys/girls but also for them to enjoy. Often, too many players burn out of the sport when pressed to take it too seriously without enjoying what they are doing.

Improve Individual Skills
My goal for individual skills is get each player ready to play on or try out for whatever level of sports goals they desire to achieve. I also want to put them in position to start and or be the best player at their position. I and everyone on my staff will plan every practice/workout with these goals for each individual. Whether your son/daughter has a storybook scholastic career or never makes a singleteam, the sport they love can be enjoyed well into their life on a recreational level, organized and non-organized.

Learn Teamwork
Boys/Girls sometimes don’t come up with this goal. I stress this HEAVILY. Sports more than anything in life, is about the team over the individual. A team with less talent working together can outperform a team with more talent.

Coach Palmer's One-on-One Basketball Training

To become better you have to dedicate time to doing the things that will make you better. The extra time you spend in the gym can help you make the team, propel you ahead of those who play in front of you, or it can set you apart as one of the best players in the city or your conference. Athleticism can make you a competitive player, but being fundamentally sound can increase your versatility and value. It is important to evaluate your skill level and determine what goal you want to achieve as a player (i.e., make the team, start varsity, play college basketball, etc...). Since everyone's goals are different, MVP School of Sports L.L.C. one-on-one sessions are designed to give each player the individual attention needed to improve their basketball ability and take their game to the next skill level. Sessions focus on identifying weaknesses and developing strategies and drills in an individual workout that will improve and punish each weakness while strengthening existing abilities in order to meet individual goals. Sessions are intense and the player is pushed hard to accomplish their goal of improving their skill level.

From defense to offense, the player is evaluated and given instruction so they can progress and improve. Catch and pivot, free throw shooting, defense, ball-handling, quickness, stamina, movement without the ball, shooting with and without the dribble, low post moves, as well as other aspects of the game of basketball are evaluated and improved upon each training session. Sessions are personal and designed to take the time allotted to improve that player’s skill level and develop confidence and consistency in their abilities so they can advance in the game of basketball, and meet their personal basketball goals.

In addition to the weekly workout instruction and training students receive Coach Palmer will also attend games to evaluate what improvement has been made or still needs to be made. A cornerstone of MVP School of Sports instructional training is this Player Development Program. Its design breaks away from the traditional training model of players grouped by age or grade. This Player Development Program seeks to improve the traditional model of instructional basketball training by offering a program designed to coach players based on ability rather than age. Skilled players can improve their game with other skilled players and thus creating a quality training environment where players’ skill levels are equal and calibrated based on group norms. The program consists of 5-tier levels, all with progressive skill challenges involving footwork, conditioning, basketball IQ, and overall basketball development. The curriculum is customized for the skill level of each player and is based on individual abilities. Players that reach a defined skill level advance to the next level.

Testimonial, November 2012:

Hey Coach!
If you have not already heard, Charlie made the basketball team at MBMS this year! Thanks for getting him prepared-your camps were awesome.  He was very excited.  Have a great weekend.
